About Kenya Dive Trips

Our Kenya dive trips take place in the stunning Indian Ocean waters off the Kenyan coast. The entire coast has a fringing reef running parallel to it that is protected from overfishing and reef damage by marine park laws dedicating marine reserves.

These marine parks are:

  • Kisite Mpunguti National Marine Park -75miles south of Mombasa
  • Mpunguti National Reserve
  • Mombasa National Marine Park and Reserve -Mombasa
  • Malindi National Marine Park-Malindi
  • Watamu National Marine Park- Watamu
  • Kiunga Marine Park- Lamu

The fringing reef stretches along the coast with periodic heads of stunning coral and marine life includes butterfly fish, parrot fish, rock cod, angel fish and manta rays with dolphins, reef sharks and turtles often seen. Colorful corals including staghorn, brain, mushroom and lavender corals mixed with anemones and coral fish such as moorish idols, lionfish and clownfish make these dive sites a mixture of color not to be missed by enthusiastic divers. Other possible sightings on Kenyan dive sites include the giant of the fishes, the Whale Shark.

There is cavern diving near Kilifi at the famous Vuma caverns which are a number of caves forming excellent fish hideouts and retreats where species such as kingfish and blue rays can be regularly found.

Buccaneer Diving also contributed greatly to Kenya’s dive sites when they sank Kenya’s largest wreck dive, the MV Dania to form an excellent artificial reef as well as a great wreck to explore.

Visibility averages at the Kenya dive sites between 10m after the rains to 20m plus in the period before the rains. The best time to dive in most Kenyan dive sites is in November before the short rains and February and March before the longer rains. Between May and August stronger winds make getting to the dive sites a little rougher, however Buccaneer Diving offer dive trips all year around and can also offer shore diving from the Mnarani base at Kilifi.
