Marine Environment Specialist Internship

Are you interested in the underwater eco-system and would like to learn more about it whilst having fun and awesome experiences? The internship includes all PADI Courses to Advanced Open Water, 12 PADI Specialty Diver courses focused around learning about the underwater world and over 40 dives with the option to include accommodation and a full set of BRAND NEW scuba diving equipment TO KEEP

This structured internship is designed for anyone who has an interest in the marine world under the ocean and the effect that it can have on the rest of the planet. Besides receiving diver training on this program you will also do PADI Specialty courses specifically on various aspects of the underwater world.

The internships cover a range of courses including your core PADI Courses of Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver but also, specialty diver courses teaching you about the underwater world, how to identify different flora and fauna under the ocean and measures to protect it. A number of the specialties were written by Buccaneer Diving staff and have been approved by PADI as distinctive specialty courses with certifications.
The courses and diving are coupled with great fun along the way in the African paradise destinations of Mombasa and Zanzibar. Our combination of dive courses ensures that you emerge from the internship a top diver very knowledgeable in the underwater environment having played a role in its protection through fish and coral surveys, underwater and beach clean-ups and other initiatives which are run by Buccaneer in conjunction with local wildlife services.

PADI Course Structure

All of our PADI Diver courses are taught in our PADI 5 Star IDC Centers in Mombasa, Kenya and Zanzibar, Tanzania. All courses are taught to PADI Standards under strict guidelines to make sure that you are trained to the highest standards possible.

General Day-to-Day Diving

As well as the dives on the course you will have plenty of opportunity to go and dive just to relax and enjoy the underwater world as well as hone your dive skills. Many of our interns leave here with well over 50 dives. The diving in East Africa is absolutely fantastic so you are encouraged to take advantage.

With all of the courses some self-study time is needed. This can range from a couple of hours having a look at a manual to an increased length of time for concepts you find a little more tricky.

I'm a Beginner- Duration: 1 Month

I'm already an Open Water Diver- Duration: 1 Month

I'm already Advanced Open Water or higher- Duration: 1 Month

Flights

Flights are not included in the price of the internship. There are many ways to get to Mombasa and most flights will require a connection in Nairobi. There are many carriers that can do this and we recommend Kenya Airways, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways for flights. Zanzibar can be reached with flights from Nairobi, Mombasa or Dar es Salaam and there is also a ferry/hydrofoil from Dar es Salaam for the more adventurous of you.

Accommodation


Accommodation is provided in a local hotel with facilities including laundry, pool table, bar area, restaurant, swimming pool and friendly staff. It is situated in an area with quick access to local amenities and nightlife but also provides an ideal place to study and prepare for your dive courses.

Meals


You are self catering but it is fairly cheap to eat in Kenya depending on what you are after .For more information on living costs in Kenya see the Frequently Asked Questions.

PADI Materials


All PADI Materials are included and will be issued to you when you arrive in Kenya for your internship

Scuba Diving Equipment


The equipment issued is a full set of brand new scuba diving equipment from top manufacturers including Scubapro. It is yours to keep from the moment we gear you up on arrival in Kenya and upgrades are available. For a full list of the equipment provided and upgrade options

Requirements


• Be at least 12 years of age
• A current Dive Medical
• Able to swim
• Appropriate visa (We provide assistance to get your visa)

When Can I Start?

You can start your internship at any time. You must bear in mind that many PADI courses have prerequisites before you can start them, which you must meet. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to meet the requirements.

Wildlife Management Program at Ol Pejeta Conservancy- 2400 euros*

Buccaneer Diving have teamed up with Ol Pejeta Conservancy to put together internships which will teach you about working with African wildlife and livestock at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Nanyuki in Kenya for one month. This is a fantastic experience which has pnly a few places open a month, which includes wildlife management training including patrolling and bushcraft, as well as training to look after a chimpanzee sacntuary (which is the only one in Kenya) plus many more animal conservation skills. The Wildlife Management Bolt On includes 1 month Full Board Accommodation and all activities at Ol Pejeta.

Underwater Photography and Videography Courses- 900 euros*

If you have an interest in capturing the underwater world then this course incorporates the PADI Digital Underwater Photography Specialty and Underwater Photographer Specialty, teaching you about using video and still digital cameras underwater with regard to composition of a scene, angles, lighting, strobe use and white balancing the cameras plus more. Additionally included as part of the package are the PADI Enriched Air Nitrox specialty course to enable you to plan longer dives and Peak performance Buoyancy to get your buoyancy underwater better in order that you can take photos and shoot video more easily without causing damage to the reef. There are also workshops on using computer editing software to create video presentations and make your photos look as good as possible. Included in the package are PADI Digital Underwater Photographer, PADI Underwater Videographer, PADI Enriched Air Diver, PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialties
